Howe confirms Tonali´s long-awaited return for EFL Cup clash

Eddie Howe has confirmed that Sandro Tonali will be in the squad for Newcastle United s EFL Cup match against Nottingham Forest.

Tonali, a £55million signing from Milan, has missed 10 months of action after being banned for a breach of betting regulations during his time in Italy.

The midfielder has been free to train with the club during that period, and Howe confirmed that Tonali will be involved.

Howe said: He will definitely be in the squad, he is fit, he just hasn’t had the game time. He has worked incredibly hard to be on top of his fitness.

I imagine a range of emotions, a lot of excitement, when you have a long time out, you have a long time to analyse and reflect.

It will be an incredible release for him. I want Sandro to come back a…

Rob Edwards says Luton are ready ‘to do it for Locks’

Luton boss Rob Edwards vowed his side are ready “to do it for Locks” as they prepare to play their first match since captain Tom Lockyer’s on-pitch cardiac arrest at Bournemouth on Saturday.

The 29-year-old Welshman has since been discharged from hospital following a successful procedure to fit an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, and has begun a period of rehabilitation at his home in the wake of the incident, which Luton said was unrelated to a previous collapse in May’s Championship play-off final.

Edwards, who was in tears as he applauded fans following what he confessed was the “scariest moment [he has] ever had in football”, revealed that while he and his men wanted to honour Lockyer, he has also felt cautious in how they approach the aftermath of…

Sanchez ends Man United nightmare with Inter loan

Alexis Sanchez s Manchester United nightmare has come to a temporary end after he joined Serie A side Inter on loan.

Neither club confirmed if there is a purchase option included in the deal, which was announced on Thursday.

Inter were keen to land Roma striker Edin Dzeko before he extended his contract with the capital club and the Nerazzurri then turned to Sanchez, who returns to Italy after leaving Udinese for Barcelona in 2011.

There were high hopes for Sanchez at United following his arrival from Premier League rivals Arsenal in January 2018 – a deal which saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to the Gunners.

We can confirm that Alexis Sanchez joins Inter Milan on loan until 30 June 2020. We wish the best of luck in Italy.

Eddie Howe paid tribute to Newcastle United s fans for their support of Sandro Tonali, who made his Premier League return in the 2-1 win over Tottenham.

Tonali came on as a 68th-minute substitute for his first league appearance since serving a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations.

Many Italy-themed flags were on display before the game in support of the midfielder, who also appeared from the bench in the midweek Carabao Cup clash with Nottingham Forest, while a banner read: Midfield maestro from Milano .

Sheffield United 0-2 Liverpool: Reigning champions end losing streak

Liverpool ended their dismal run of Premier League defeats as Curtis Jones and Kean Bryan s own goal secured a much-needed 2-0 victory over Sheffield United.

Jurgen Klopp s side went to Bramall Lane on the back of four successive top-flight losses, but finally got back to winning ways on Sunday.

With Aaron Ramsdale in superb form, Chris Wilder s strugglers switched off shortly after the interval when Trent Alexander-Arnold got to the byline, and Jones profited to become Liverpool s youngest Premier League goalscorer away from home since Raheem Sterling in December 2014.

Oli McBurnie spurned a golden chance to haul United level and was duly punished – Bryan diverting Roberto Firmino s effort over Ramsdale to send the points back to Merseyside.

Conte proud of Inter´s journey to top spot in Serie A

Antonio Conte is proud of his Inter side after the Nerazzurri moved top of Serie A thanks to a hard-earned 2-1 win over struggling SPAL.

Two first-half goals from Lautaro Martinez put Inter in control at San Siro on Sunday, although Mattia Valoti s strike sparked a much-improved display from SPAL after the break.

Martinez squandered two chances to complete his hat-trick but Inter were not made to pay for their forward s profligacy as they took advantage of Juventus earlier slip up against Sassuolo.

And Conte, who has erred on the side of caution whenever pressed on Inter s title chances so far this season, is delighted by how they have progressed under his leadership.

“We ve been working since day one to make an impact and annoy the other teams, Conte…

Lazio agree Zappacosta deal

Lazio have reached an agreement to sign Davide Zappacosta from Chelsea, according to Il Messaggero.

Zappacosta started his career at Italian fourth-tier side Isola Liri in 2009. He moved to third-tier Avellino in 2011, which he helped earn promotion to Serie B before joining Atalanta in 2014. After only a year in Bergamo, he spent two seasons with Torino before arriving at Chelsea.

He featured relatively prominently in his first season in England as manager Antonio Conte employed a 3-4-3 system and rotated Zappacosta with Victor Moses on the right wing-back position. But as Mauruzio Sarri replaced Conte and switched to 4-3-3, he has been permanently reduced to a squad role and linked with a possible departure from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have apparently accepte…
